During WWII the Red Army mastered bridging and ferrying operations. In the immediate post-war era the Soviet Union felt compelled to expand this capability and rapidly develop a new generation of modern amphibious tanks. Priority was given to an amphibious light reconnaissance tank with sufficient firepower to establish and hold bridgeheads. The PT-76 amphibious tank would become the main vehicle in Soviet and Warsaw Pact amphibious operations in the Cold War decades to come.
